How to Read a Merchant Processing Statement
A plain-English walkthrough of the line items that actually drive your effective rate — and where most owners overpay.

Most merchant statements are written for the processor, not for you. The good news: once you know where to look, an honest review takes about 15 minutes.
1. Find the effective rate
Divide total fees by total card volume for the month. Anything above 3.0% on a typical mix is worth a second look.
2. Separate interchange from markup
Interchange is set by the card networks and is largely fixed. The markup — what the processor adds on top — is where negotiation lives.
3. Watch for junk fees
PCI non-compliance fees, batch fees, monthly minimums, and 'tier downgrades' often add 0.10–0.40% without your knowing.
4. Compare to a flat interchange-plus quote
An apples-to-apples quote on interchange-plus pricing is the cleanest way to see what you're actually paying for the service layer.
